Anything you can do to reduce stress will go a long way towards improving your health.
Stress is known to contribute to a variety of physical and mental health problems. And not being sufficiently self-aware to allow for appropriate management of our stress, emotions and responses, is a main contributor to our stress levels and health getting out of hand.
Increase self-awareness for stress management
Increasing your self-awareness is an important first step towards:
- reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression,
- developing self-compassion, and
- improving your overall well-being.
How to increase self-awareness and reduce stress
One way to increase your self-awareness is by practicing mindfulness. Being mindful is defined as paying attention to the present moment. It is focusing on your experiences, thoughts, and feelings as an ‘observer’ – equipped with an open mind, curiosity, and a willingness to just sit with whatever is happening in the moment.
Practicing mindfulness is a great source of stress relief in our modern lives. It encourages us to stop for a moment, focus on our breath, observe our thoughts and feelings, and to be more connected with our experience of life.

Benefits of practicing mindfulness
Research shows practicing mindfulness can improve many health issues, including:
- relieving symptoms of anxiety and depression,
- reducing emotional reactivity,
- lowering blood pressure,
- boosting the immune system,
- increasing attention and focus,
- supporting well-being, and
- strengthening the areas of the brain responsible for decision making, emotional flexibility, and empathy.
The Mindful Awareness Research Centre (MARC) provides a variety of free guided mindfulness meditations that you can practice on your own. Each of these meditations leads you through a reflective mindful practice aimed at increasing your capacity for calm, objective observation, as well as increasing your awareness and focus – essential tools for self-awareness (and for improving self-confidence), as well as being a fantastic source of relaxation – what’s not to LOVE!
MARC also offers free weekly meditation podcasts. It is one of my favourite resources. Give it a try.
And remember – practice improves everything! Don’t expect miracles on your first attempt.
